How do people over 50 meet in the UK?

The easiest way to meet new people over 50 in the UK is a regular group built around something you enjoy: walking, learning, sport, making things or volunteering. Seeing the same faces every week is what turns small talk into friendship, and sometimes more. Here's how the main options compare:

Group Good for Usual cost How to find one
Ramblers walks Easy conversation, fresh air Ask the local group Search by town or postcode
u3a Learning, talks, interest groups Low annual subscription, set locally Find your local u3a
parkrun A weekly routine, walking or running Free Find an event near you
Walking football Gentle team sport Set by each club WFA club directory
Men's Sheds Practical projects, tea and chat Varies by shed Map search
Volunteering Purpose and a regular shift Free Royal Voluntary Service and local charities

Our guide to senior singles groups explains how to pick one you'll enjoy and what to expect the first time.

Walking groups: the easiest way in

Ramblers has more than 500 local groups across Britain and runs up to 50,000 group walks a year, each led by a walk leader. You can search for walks by town or postcode on the Ramblers group walks page.

Walking side by side is one of the easiest ways to get talking to someone new. You don't have to hold eye contact, and there's always scenery to comment on.

parkrun: free, every Saturday morning

parkrun is a free, timed 5k held every Saturday morning in parks across the UK, and walkers are welcome as well as runners. You register once online, then simply turn up. Many events have a café nearby where people gather afterward. Because the same people come back week after week, it's an easy, low-pressure way to become a familiar face. (Pennine Care NHS)

Learning and interest groups: your local u3a

The u3a is a UK-wide movement of locally run groups where members learn for the pleasure of it, with no exams or qualifications, and anyone can teach as well as learn. It began in 1982. There are no age limits; the u3a describes its members as being in their "third age", and most have stepped away from full-time work or finished raising a family.

Each u3a is funded by its members' subscriptions, sets its own fee and keeps costs as low as it can. Because groups meet regularly, you get to know the same people over time. Find one through the u3a website.

Walking football

Walking football is football played at walking pace, and clubs often organize teams and tournaments by age group. The Walking Football Association promotes the game in England and has a club directory to find a club near you. It also has a women's game section.

As an example of how clubs set their age rules, Exeter Strollers welcomes men over 50 and women over 40, plays in mixed teams as well as women's teams, and enters tournaments at 50-plus, 60-plus, 65-plus and 70-plus. (WFA listing)

Men's Sheds

A Men's Shed is a community workshop where people take on practical projects, share skills and make friends over tea. The UK Men's Sheds Association has a map of sheds you can search by postcode or town, and it will help you start one if there isn't one nearby. Sheds are aimed mainly at men, but the association says "everyone's welcome", so ask your local shed about its own rules.

Volunteering

The Royal Voluntary Service has volunteer roles in hospitals, in the community (including companionship and helping people get back on their feet after illness), at lunch clubs and social activity centers, and as volunteer drivers. Its volunteers gave 1.8 million hours in the past year. Most applications need two forms of ID, and some roles need a DBS check (England and Wales) or PVG check (Scotland). Search roles on the Royal Voluntary Service volunteering page.

Our guide to volunteering as a way to meet people over 50 explains how to choose a role that suits you.

Ask your GP practice about local groups

In England, many GP practices have a social prescribing link worker: someone who helps people find local groups, activities and support, often for loneliness as much as health. You don't need to be unwell to ask; mention that you'd like to meet people and get out more. (NHS England) Elsewhere in the UK, the advice lines below can point you to local groups.

Free advice lines for older people

Each UK nation has its own free advice line for older people, and all of them can tell you what's on locally.

Line Number When
Age UK Advice Line 0800 678 1602 8am to 7pm, every day of the year
The Silver Line (for people 55 and over, run by Age UK) 0800 4 70 80 90 24 hours a day, every day
Age Scotland helpline 0800 12 44 222 Monday to Friday, 9am to 1pm
Age Cymru Advice 0300 303 44 98 Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm
Age NI Advice Service 0808 808 7575 Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm

The Silver Line is also simply someone to talk to, day or night. Age UK says calls to it are always free.

Meeting someone safely

Meet a new match somewhere busy in daylight, make your own way there and back, and tell a friend where you'll be. In many UK pubs and bars, a police-backed scheme called Ask for Angela lets you ask staff for "Angela" if a date makes you feel unsafe, and they'll discreetly help you leave. Not every venue takes part, so look for the posters. Meeting a match in person has the full checklist.

Reporting a romance scam in the UK

Where you report depends on which UK nation you live in.

  • England, Wales and Northern Ireland: Report Fraud, online at reportfraud.police.uk or on 0300 123 2040. Report Fraud replaced Action Fraud on 4 December 2025.
  • Scotland: Police Scotland on 101.
  • In an emergency, or if someone is in danger, call 999.

Call your bank first if you've sent money; calling 159 connects you to most UK banks safely. In England and Wales, the charity Victim Support runs a free Supportline on 08 08 16 89 111 for anyone affected by crime, including fraud. Where to report a romance scam has the details, and romance scams aimed at people over 50 explains how they unfold.

Dating online from the UK

Just Senior Singles is written in American English, but it's open to members in the UK, and dating online works well alongside a local group when your own area is quiet. Joining, writing a profile and browsing are free, and you must be 18 or over. Reading and replying to messages needs a paid membership. The prices page lists US prices; the members area shows the exact price before you pay. For more ideas on meeting people offline, read where senior singles really meet.
